Module summary
This is an integral module on the Gateway to Medicine programme which will provide students with a solid foundation of professionalism in the context of medicine, foster an appreciation of multidisciplinary team working, explore the NHS structure and how health provision is supported by the voluntary sector.Students will have formal teaching led by clinical professionals who will bring clinical experience and expertise to the classroom. Throughout the year the students will be mentored by members of the Patient Carer Community (PCC) enabling students to develop their communication skills so that they may interact more effectively with patients and carers. Through the PCC sessions students will cultivate an understanding of the patient experience and become familiar with the patient journey highlighting the importance of patient centred care. Students will also be given the opportunity to improve their independent learning strategies.Objectives
The aims of this module are for students:1. To gain an understanding of the patient journey in the NHS;
2. To develop communication skills for clinical practice, including communication with patients, carers and colleagues;
3. To develop knowledge of the NHS and voluntary services;
4. To discuss the role of voluntary services in healthcare;
5. To explore the concept of professionalism and its importance in the medical context.

By the end of this module students will be able to:
1. Discuss the nature of patient journeys and the daily practice of healthcare practitioners;
2. Develop communication skills with the Patient Carer Community, health care professionals, students, and academics in both informal and formal settings;
3. Explore the benefits and the challenges of multi-professional healthcare;
4. Discuss the benefits and challenges of the role of voluntary services in healthcare;
5. Recognized the importance of exploring the patient and carer perspective in safe and high-quality healthcare.

Syllabus
The module is deigned to introduce students participating in the widening participation programme to develop appropriate communication skills with a wide range of people likely to be encountered in healthcare and community settings. Taught content will support student in this task by focusing on the following:
• Professional practice in healthcare
• Overview of NHS structure and services
• Professional roles and responsibilities in healthcare
• The work of voluntary services in the community
• Principles of professional communication
• Patient and carer perspectives

Private study
Private study tasks relate to the content of the course and the preparation of the assessed pieces of coursework including the reflective portfolio. Students will use the experiences that have been gained from face-to-face contact sessions and support material will be available on Minerva.Independent learning tasks are designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop their skills as independent learners.
There is a weekly timetabled self-directed learning session of 3 hours.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students' engagement with the module and progress will be monitored on a continuous basis by module tutors assigned to groups based on feedback from members of the patient carer community, participation in group activities and through the reflections in the formative e-portfolio. Group tutors will provide regular feedback on the e-portfolio activities.Methods of assessment
