Module summary

Taught content will focus on gaining an understanding of professionalism in the context of medicine. Developing an understanding of skills and attributes required to succeed in their future studies in medical education. Content will be aligned to ensuring students can meet the intended learning outcomes.

Objectives

1. To explore the concept of professionalism and its importance in the medical context;
2. To develop knowledge of the NHS and voluntary services and the advantages and limitations of collaborative working.
3. To gain an understanding of the patient journey, by understanding MDT working
4. To develop communication skills for clinical practice, including communication with patients, carers, and colleagues.

Learning outcomes:
By the end of this module, students will be able to:
1. 1. To be able to explain why professionalism and displaying professional behaviours is important in medicine and through discussion identify challenges to this.
2. To be able to describe the NHS structure; and discuss the challenges of working collaboratively between primary and secondary care and with the voluntary sector
3. To be able to discuss the nature of the patient journey and the benefits and the challenges of multi-professional teams.
4. To be able to demonstrate communication skills and self-awareness through facilitated sessions with the patient and carers community, health care professionals, students, and academics.

Syllabus

Semester 1 will focus on professionalism. Students will have input from the Patient Carer Community to help understand patient expectations of health care professionals. Students will be taught about General Medical Council expectations of a good medical doctor. Students will explore various scenarios that pose ethical dilemmas for a doctor. Students will explore the interface between primary and secondary care and between the NHS and voluntary sector.
Semester 2 will focus on multi-disciplinary and multi-organisational working. Students will explore the benefits and challenges of working within multidisciplinary teams. The students will develop an understanding of outside agencies that contribute to health and health care.

Private study

Private study and independent learning are required as part of this module outside formal contact hours. Independent online learning might include pre-work set for formal taught sessions and self-directed learning to support students to prepare for module and programme assessment. In addition, students will need to undertake additional study to plan and prepare module assessments. SDL sessions 20 x 3 hours over the academic year

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student performance (attendance, contribution & professionalism) will be monitored during formal taught sessions by the academic tutor throughout the academic year. This will be discussed with each student during the 1:1 Tutorial sessions. Tutorials will aid student understanding of the requirements of the module and the module assessment. The programme lead will review student progress at Course Management Team meetings and academic tutors and the module lead is expected to raise any concerns relating to student progress when they first arise to the programme lead.
Academic tutors will provide written feedback to students on all draft and assessed work. Feedback will be given at timetabled tutorials as required. Assessments are timed to align with wider programme assessment to maximise opportunities for students to apply feedback to future assessment
