Module summary
This module will develop students’ academic knowledge and skills to undertake undergraduate degree level study in medicine. It will equip students with the skills to become critical thinkers, reflective practitioners and to plan their own personal and professional development.Objectives
The module objectives are:1. To prepare students to study Medicine at undergraduate level;
2. To equip students with the skills to become reflective practitioners;
3. To equip students with the skills to become critical thinkers;
4. To equip students with the knowledge and skills to plan their own professional development
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Implement effective strategies for group learning, time management, academic reading, digital learning, research, academic writing and verbal presentations;
2. Identify effective learning strategies appropriate for the different learning environments in undergraduate medicine.
3. Appreciate at a basic level the social, economic, political and ethical issues inherent in contemporary medical practice;
4. Identify, critically evaluate and assess information and present it in a range of formats;
5. Reflect on their own personal and professional practice and development and action plan;
6. Demonstrate effective use of virtual learning environments to support their learning

Syllabus
This module is designed to support and develop confidence in students participating in the widening participation Gateway programme for transition into Medicine.
Students will undertake a project related to an aspect of medical education in order for students to develop key academic knowledge, skills and confidence to meet the learning outcomes outlined above. Taught content will be delivered to support students in this task and will focus on the following areas:
• Time management
• Learning approaches and theories of learning
• Critical, analytical and reflecting thinking
• Digital skills
• Communication skills
• Research skills
• Presentation skills
• Personal development planning
• Examination preparation

Private study
module Students are expected to undertake private study and independent learning as part of this module outside formal contact hours. Opportunities for private study and independent learning are facilitated through the use of mobile technology and the virtual learning environment. Private study and independent learning hours relate to the preparation of assessed work, including verbal presentations and written coursework in addition to pre-reading and independent learning tasks associated with taught content (e.g. wider reading, writing up notes).Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student performance (attendance, contribution & professionalism) will be monitored during formal taught sessions by the academic tutor throughout the academic year and discussed with each student during the group tutorials and 1:1 sessions. Tutorials will aid student understanding of the requirements of the module and the module assessment. Academic tutors will provide written feedback to students on all draft work. Feedback will be discussed at timetabled tutorials as required. The programme lead will review student progress at Course Management Team meetings and academic tutors and the module lead will be expected to raise any concerns relating to student progress when they first arise to the programme lead.Students will also have regular meetings with a nominated Personal Tutor each term to discuss academic progress and pastoral support more widely. The student will have the opportunity to share the reflective task component of this module with their personal tutor if they wish.
