Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to ...Syllabus
The OSCE consists of 13 stations for main sequence 1 assessment, and total of 25 stations for students also sitting sequence 2, and forms part of the assessment for progression. The result is graded.
Sequence 1 6 long stations 12 minutes per station
7 short stations 10 minutes per station
Sequence 2 5 long stations 12 minutes per station
7 short stations 8 minutes per station
Students who perform well enough during sequence 1 will not be required to sit sequence 2. Students who perform so poorly during sequence 1 that they will be unable to achieve the overall pass mark will not be required to sit for sequence 2.
Students will be notified on or soon after 14th May 2020 if they are required to sit sequence 2.
If a student misses sequence 1 it will be established if any form of mitigation is warranted; a mitigation form must be completed and considered by the undergraduate special circumstances committee. If mitigation is not accepted the student fails sequence 1 and is given a mark of 0. If mitigation is accepted then the student will be offered a chance to sit sequence 2 with additional arrangements for wider testing. Their mark will then be determined by a combination of sequence 2 and the additional test of a further 6 stations as an additional circuit on the same day as sequence 2. It is important to note that under these circumstances, there is no opportunity for further sequential tests in this diet. Students will pass or fail as determined by their performance on this extended sequence.
In the OSCE simulated patients or real patients may be used. Communication skills and other generic skills may be assessed at any station. The assessment of student performance will be carried out by trained examiners and, where appropriate, by the simulated or real patients themselves. There may be more than one assessor (e.g. trainee examiners, external examiners, senior year 5 academic assessors) present at each station.
Details of a dress code will be issued prior to the OSCE. It will closely follow that issued by Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.
Students must achieve all of the following to pass the OSCE:
a) The overall pass mark
b) Pass 60% of the stations
c) Achieve a minimum of 60% satisfactory patient/simulated patient scores
Students who fail to reach the overall pass mark will be awarded an āFā. Students who reach the pass mark but do not pass the required number of stations listed above will be awarded an āEā. Students are awarded an E or an F will be deemed to have failed the OSCE.
