Module summary

The major part of Year 5 comprises 6 clinical placements, each of 4 weeks duration. The placements include one in primary care, and 5 secondary care, including one musculoskeletal medicine and surgery and a mix of medical/surgical specialties.

Objectives

The Year 5 aims are threefold, ensuring students are equipped for professional practice as newly qualified doctors through:
• possession and understanding of a suitable and relevant knowledge base
• clinical competence across a wide range of skills relevant to the Foundation year and beyond
• demonstration of appropriate professional attributes and ongoing professional development

Learning outcomes
Students are required to develop the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional behaviour required to be a competent junior doctor.
Students will obtain the underlying knowledge base required to work as a Foundation doctor.
Students will become competent in the key practical clinical skills for early medical practice, as outlined in Tomorrow’s Doctors.
Students will be able to integrate basic science, clinical methods and clinical skills into initial and subsequent patient management plans including safe prescribing practice.
Students will understand and apply the key ethical principles required for practice as a doctor and demonstrate the required professional behaviours.

Syllabus

The main focus of Year 5 learning reflects the range of core medical and surgical specialties. Students are approaching clinical practice and they will also be familiar with conditions in other specialties including obstetrics, gynaecology, psychiatry dermatology, ENT and ophthalmology as appropriate to junior doctor practice

Students are assessed during each of the six placements by presenting a case presentation at the end of each placement. The marks along with the students attendance and general conduct are recorded by the consultant and passed to the University. Students can fail 1 placement and still automatically progress to their final exams. If a student fails more than 1 placement, the head of year looks at each case individually.
