Module summary
This module will provide an introduction to medical imaging and an appreciation of its role in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disease.Objectives
To provide an appreciation and understanding of the basic principles underpinning the common medical imaging modalities and how they are used to identify and monitor musculoskeletal disease.Learning outcomes
On completing this module students should be able to:
- Describe the basic principles underpinning MRI, Ultrasound, DXA and X-ray and how these imaging modalities produce diagnostic medical images.
- Recall the basic anatomy and physiology of specific musculoskeletal diseases.
- Understand how the major imaging modalities are used independently and collectively to identify musculoskeletal disease.
- Identify and understand how diagnostic images are perceived by the reader, and the problems associated with this.

Understand how medical imaging modalities can be used to identity and monitor musculoskeletal disease.
Syllabus
- Physics of imaging modalities, X-ray, DXA, MRI and Ultrasound including:
- Formation of ultrasound images based on the pulse echo principle and application of ultrasound within the clinical setting.
- Formation of MR images; the Larmor equation, relaxation mechanisms and spin echo sequences and application of MRI
within the clinical setting.
- Methods of X-ray production and X-ray image formation and its application within the clinical setting.
- Collection of bone density data using DXA.
- Introduction to musculoskeletal disease including basic anatomy and physiology and presentation of disease on diagnostic images.
- How the reader views diagnostics images including image perception.
