Module summary
This module provides students with the ability to appraise critically the role and application of qualitative approaches in applied health research. Topics covered will include: the role and contribution of qualitative approaches in applied health research; qualitative study design; generating and analysing qualitative data; ethical considerations; processes for assessing quality in qualitative research; conducting qualitative research in a health research context; challenges of conducting applied qualitative health research. On completing the course, students will be able to critically appraise the contribution of qualitative research in applied health research, and have the skills to formulate and conduct a small scale qualitative health research project. Objectives
This module provides students with a thorough understanding of the role and application of qualitative approaches in applied health research. In particular, the course will address the role of qualitative research in applied health research settings, qualitative study design, and the practice of applied qualitative health research. It will include topics on: the types of applied health research questions we can answer using a qualitative approach; formulating research questions; designing and conducting applied qualitative health research; data generation (methods) and analysis; and the strengths, limitations, and challenges of qualitative health research.
Critical appraisal of an applied qualitative health research proposal and writing a hypothetical research proposal will assess learning.
Learning outcomes
Once a student has successfully completed the module and its assignments he or she should be able to:
- Appraise critically the role of qualitative research in applied health research (including the contribution it can make, the types of questions it can address, the place of qualitative research in larger programmes of health research, the challenges of conducting applied health research)
- Formulate a qualitative health research question and identify an appropriate approach, method(s), sample and analytic strategy to address the question
- Conduct effective qualitative interviews and observations
- Evaluate critically different approaches to analysis
- Identify and appraise critically the strengths and limitations of qualitative research
- Engage critically with the processes of demonstrating quality in qualitative research
- Identify and resolve ethical considerations that may arise in applied qualitative health research
Skills outcomes
This module provides students with a critical awareness of applied qualitative health research and develops their qualitative research skills.
It will include topics on: the role and contribution of qualitative approaches in applied health research; qualitative study design (including the different approaches to qualitative research, sampling, ethical considerations and demonstrating quality in qualitative research); generating data (including qualitative interviews, observation and focus groups); analysing qualitative data (including grounded theory, phenomenology and narrative analysis); conducting qualitative research in a health research context; challenges of conducting applied qualitative health research.
Syllabus
The teaching style for this module will be active and participative. Where the module is taught entirely online we will replicate ‘group activities’ and students will be asked to complete online tasks and activities that mirror the pre-Covid19 teaching style. Students will be introduced to: the role and contribution of qualitative approaches in applied health research; qualitative study design; generating and analysing qualitative data; ethical considerations; processes for assessing quality in qualitative research; conducting qualitative research in a health research context; challenges of conducting applied qualitative health research.
