Module summary

You will write a dissertation of 10,000 words based on a body of primary sources. The dissertation will evaluate relevant secondary literature, display the ability to set out a problem, discuss methodology and construct a clearly expressed argument. The dissertation will explore some aspect of history relevant to the medieval period, and can be written on a topic of your choice, subject to the availability of appropriate supervision.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to allow you to acquire an in-depth understanding of a specific historical topic related to the medieval period through the use and analysis of primary and secondary materials. The module also allows you to synthesise the results of such work, and to produce a coherent and extended piece of historical writing.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students will have demonstrated the following subject specific learning outcomes:
1. knowledge and understanding of a specific topic in Medieval Studies through the use and analysis of primary and secondary materials
2. synthesis of the results of such work to produce a coherent and extended piece of historical writing

Skills Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, students will have demonstrated the following learning skills outcomes:

4. the ability to present complex historical material in an extended piece of written work


Syllabus

This dissertation module consists of regular meetings with the supervisor of the project, as well as 2 two-hour dissertation workshops run by the module coordinator (one in semester 1 and one in semester 2).

The compulsory skills module MEDV5110M taken by all students on the MA in Medieval Studies as an element of the core training means that students will acquire research skills in semester one through a series of assessed assignments and scheduled seminar work.
