Module summary

The Old Norse-speaking world stretched from Constantinople to North America, and the Old Icelandic literature which arose from it gives us some of our fullest insights into any medieval society. This module will provide you with the linguistic and critical skills you need to study Old Norse texts in the original, from early medieval runic inscriptions to later medieval sagas, underpinning research in medieval history, language and literature, and in modern medievalism.

Objectives

This module is designed to enable students to translate and interpret Old Norse texts, to gain a broad and critical acquaintance with Old Norse writing in a range of genres, and to enable primary-source research at MA and PhD level using texts written in Old Norse.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Analyse Old Norse grammar and the metalanguage used to describe it
2. Evaluate an extensive range of Old Norse genres of writing
3. Use and apply scholarly resources for advanced original-language study of Old Norse texts

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4. Learn the fundamentals of a new language in a short time (work-ready)
5. Use digital language-learning and translation tools creatively but critically (digital)

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' weekly presentation of translations in language seminars will enable close monitoring of progress. This will be underpinned by unassessed online homework exercises, submission of one unassessed translation in each term for which written feedback will be provided, and class tests.
