Module summary

This module supports students in finding and acknowledging their use of relevant resources in their subject areas.

Objectives

This module has three main objectives:
1) It introduces students to key library skills relating to searching for information and resources in their subject areas.
2) It draws together key information about academic conventions relating to the use of other people’s work, including full information on citing and referencing. It provides essential information about what constitutes academic malpractice.
3) It houses the university’s compulsory tutorial and quiz on academic integrity.

Learning outcomes
Students will learn how to focus their searches for academic information, how to recognise different types of resource and how to use record information in a way that protects them from unintentional plagiarism. Students will be made aware of issues surrounding academic conventions in acknowledging other people’s work and about avoiding charges of academic malpractice. By completing the tutorial and AI quiz, students will be able to apply their understanding.

Using the library catalogue; subject resources; electronic searches; using databases; managing information; note-taking and proofreading; referencing and citation; using quotations; academic malpractice and plagiarism; using Endnote; academic integrity tutorial and quiz.

Private study

Students will follow links into the Skills@Library resources and work through the information provided. There are small tasks to complete, which will need to be finished correctly before moving to the next area. The last part of the module is the university's academic integrity tutorial and quiz, which students need to complete in order to pass the module.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be tracked in terms of time spent on this module, as well as being required to complete small tasks before being able to move on. Scores for the AI quiz are run as a report in January.
