Module summary
This module aims to develop students' public speaking skills and their ability to write and critque formal speeches.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to undertake a formal analysis of a given speech, writ a persuasive speech and deliver a speech clearly and convincingly.Learning outcomes
Students on completion of the module should thoroughly understand:
- formal characteristics of speeches;
- elements which contribute to the effectiveness of speeches;
- the process of writing a persuasive speech;
- the skills involved in delivering a speech effectively; and
- how presentational aids can be usefull employed in public speaking.
Skills outcomes
On completion of the module should be able to:
- discuss the formal elements of a given speech;
- write a persuasive speech
- employ good public speaking skillsto good effect
- use presentational aids effectively
Syllabus
The following areas will be covered:
- Neo-Aristotelean approaches to speech analysis
- rhetorical devices such as alliteration, use of metaphor and tripling
- Speech writing
- Audience motivations
- Practise in oral delivery; and
- Effective use of Powerpoint and other visual aids
