Module summary
The module explores how the notion of culture and language are relevant to international business. It engages with the localisation of products and services and considers advertisements as a form of discourse practice through the use of real case studies. Strategies used by multinational corporations in addressing cultural and linguistic differences are investigated and the topic of effective teamwork is put into practice through a group presentation.Objectives
The module aims to detail how the notion of culture has been seen as relevant to international business and to what extent some paradigms have been productive or potentially harmful. The module also aims to raise your awareness of issues facing people who work and manage businesses in diverse environments and to develop your knowledge and skills for working effectively in these environments. You will also engage with the complexity of localising products which move across international borders and into new cultural and linguistic contexts.The module will be delivered via lectures and seminars which encourage group collaboration and discussion. A portion of the seminar will be devoted to allow for student presentation preparation.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Design and conduct independent research in the field of Intercultural Studies
2. Identify and explain key factors that may play a role in intercultural settings and be able to apply these concepts to new contexts
3. Communicate your ideas accurately and effectively, with individuals and in groups
4. Identify and evaluate the role you play in negotiating and influencing others through self-reflection

5. Recognise and express knowledge (both orally and in writing) and demonstrate how it relates to personal experiences
