Module summary

A practical introduction to essential interpreting skills.

Objectives

This module aims to introduce students to the profession of interpreting while also helping them develop basic interpreting skills including memory skills, note-taking, presentation and delivery skills, and the ability to summarise the main points in a speech or dialogue and clearly articulate a message.

Students may go on to apply these skills in more advanced training in interpreting should they wish to do so.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should show evidence of:
- familiarity with the main forms and contexts of interpreting
- competency in basic interpreting skills as described above
- a broad knowledge of current affairs which is relevant to their preparedness for further interpreting studies
- a proactive and self-reflective approach to their work and an ability to develop professional relationships with others.

Syllabus

This module offers a blend of conceptual knowledge and practical experience in exploring basic approaches to interpreting. In addition to providing a detailed examination of the contexts in which the different forms and modes of interpreting are practised, it offers practical advice and training in the skills (memory, analytical skills, note-taking, expression, general knowledge, and presentation skills) required for basic interpreting, creating a platform from which to pursue more intensive interpreting study if desired. Exercises will generally be monolingual.
