Objectives
On completion of this module students should be able to apply advanced concentration, analysis and memory skills, competent note-taking techniques, and the ability to express the speaker's structure and intentions in a clear, natural and articulate way in the target language.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should have shown evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate knowledge relevant to professional conference interpreting;
- comprehend, analyse and synthesise information efficiently and logically;
- present information accurately, coherently and efficiently when interpreting with effective note-taking skills
- take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and develop professional relationships with others
- work in a team and cope under stress

Syllabus
Practical seminars and workshops in conference interpreting facilities will focus on introducing and consolidating basic interpreting skills such as active listening, analytical and presentation skills, speech preparation and making, as well as note-taking techniques. Students will also develop the ability to summarise long and dense speeches. Guidance on key themes/skills of interpreting (e.g. quality; professional bodies; international organisations; interpreting in different settings; terminology preparation) will also be given.

Private study
Intensive practice in mixed language groups with materials available on-line and in the resources library.- Memory training and development of presentation skills: preparation of presentations in languages A and B on a topic of the week
- Practice of interpretation with note-taking in one's own and mixed language groups
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress in professional competence will be monitored throughout the semester through regular/oral feedback on student performances in class. A session on feedback and exam criteria will be held to explain how to give constructive feedback and how the quality of an interpreting performance is assessed against marking criteria.Written summative feedback from module tutors will be provided for the assessments.

A 15-minute oral assessment of competence in consecutive interpreting skills with note-taking in the student’s native language (A). The assessment will be scheduled during the Semester 1 exam period. The performance will be recorded.
