Module summary
Even though localisation has developed as a separate industry domain, this field shares the same principles as translation, meaning that translators are ideally placed to work in this field. This module acquaints students with the general principles of a localisation workflow and project management and provide students with an opportunity to gain practical experience in producing localisation content, commissioning and coordinating localisation projects.Objectives
The module aims to help students develop a good understanding of the principles and different types of localisation. It prepares students with analytical skills to consider meaning-making in multimodal texts such as websites, corporate videos and video games. The module also provides students the analytical and critical skills to consider target context and apply relevant localisation strategies. Students will be introduced to specialised localisation tools and software and equipped with an advanced understanding of localisation workflows and localisation project management.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. explain the principles of localisation
2. analyse source text and target context features and identify relevant localisation strategies
3. use a range of localisation tools and software for game, website and corporate video localisation
4. show a good understanding of localisation project management, project constraints and have a good knowledge of the current developments of localisation
5. participate in and coordinate multilingual localisation projects
6. advise on streamlining the localisation workflow using the resources available

Syllabus
In this module, you will be trained to use a range of localisation tools and software in order to carry out localisation project and devise localisation strategies. You will also explore the different areas of localisation, including but not limited to game, website and corporate video localisation.
By engaging you with the advanced features of localisation tools, this module mimics real-life scenarios, allowing you to practise developing and managing localisation projects. You will be introduced to a wide range of resources and literature on localisation, which allow you to pursue further research interest or advise your future employer on applying the most appropriate localisation resources and tools.
