Module summary

Simultaneous interpreting is widely employed by major international institutions such as the United Nations and the European Union. It is an essential tool for professional interpreters and a mode required by many employers on the private and institutional markets.This module introduces and develops the key, core skills in Spanish simultaneous interpreting.Building on the skills introduced through the Interpreting Skills: Consecutive and Simultaneous module, students will engage in guided, focused practical implementation of the skills of simultaneous interpreting in this language pair.

Objectives

The main objectives of this module are to introduce the students to, and enable them to develop, the skills required for effective, professional simultaneous interpreting. In order to achieve this, the module focuses on specific techniques, such as deverbalisation, to support the effective cognitive processing necessary for effective reconstruction of the original, source language speech in the target language. The module also develops skills to enable the rapid assimilation of domain-specific knowledge about the quite technical subjects which form the basis of the content of speeches to be interpreted. Finally, the module provides a basic understanding and awareness of the requirements of simultaneous interpreting including working in a booth on the private and institutional markets.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Research and prepare effectively ahead of a simultaneous interpreting assignment;-
2. Analyse, anticipate and deverbalise a speech in their source language and synthesise this message into their target language;-
3. Interpret effectively into their A language in the simultaneous mode.

Skills learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

SO1. Academic: reflection and critical thinking to understand priorities for making interpreting decisions.

SO2. Work-Ready interpreting skills: creativity in problem solving; time management.

SO3. Technical: improved knowledge of source and target language.


Syllabus

During practicals held in the University’s interpreting facilities, intensive practice of simultaneous interpreting will be carried out with tutors who are professional interpreters. This will involve the use of authentic materials including speeches delivered by native speakers on a variety of topics and pre-recorded speeches, including those from a number of international organisations.A range of exercises aimed at developing good analysis, anticipation and segmentation skills as well as target language reformulation and delivery will be integrated into the practicals to enable students to develop the skills and sub-skills required for simultaneous interpreting. Pedagogical materials produced by international organisations for training purposes may be used for self-study and in the practicals. Additional virtual classes may be arranged in cooperation with partner universities and international institutions such as the European Commission depending on availability.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

As this module is skills-based, the tutors will provide oral, formative, focused feedback and guidance during the practical sessions. In addition, students will be provided with the guidance and instruction to provide feedback to peers and to self-assess during private study hours.
