Module summary

Consecutive interpreting is a major mode of interpreting commonly used in various settings. This module is designed to provide focused training in consecutive interpreting. Language-pair specific practice relevant to "Topics of the Week" is conducted in the sessions in a progressive manner in order to consolidate students' consecutive interpreting skills and techniques.

Objectives

This module develops the concentration, analysis and recall skills essential to effective interpreting in the consecutive mode. This will be achieved through a focus on techniques specific to this mode, such as active listening and note-taking. The aim is to support students in being able to express the speaker's original structure and intentions in a clear, natural and articulate way in the target language.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
LO1- comprehend, analyse and synthesise information in the source language;
LO2- make effective use of note-taking;
LO3- structure and present information accurately, coherently and fluently in the target language
LO4- demonstrate broad knowledge in politics, business and current affairs, as necessary for professional preparedness;
LO5- perform effectively in a high intensity professional environment.

SO1. Work-ready interpreting skills
SO2. Technical skills relating to note-taking and presentation


Syllabus

Practical sessions in the University's interpreting facilities will focus on practising and consolidating fundamental consecutive interpreting skills such as active listening, analytical and presentation skills, speech preparation and making, note-taking, as well as reformulation techniques. Students will also develop the ability to summarise relatively long and dense speeches. Guidance on key themes/skills of interpreting (e.g. quality; professional bodies; international organisations; interpreting in different settings; terminology preparation) will also be given.Additional virtual classes may be arranged in cooperation with partner universities and international institutions such as the European Commission depending on their availability.
