Objectives

On completion of this module students:
- will have acquired advanced competence in all the necessary consecutive interpreting skills, including sound note-taking, good memory, ability to summarise main points in a speech, clearly enunciate, perform to an audience and cope under stress;
- should be able to apply these skills in a professional capacity.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should have shown evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate knowledge relevant to the Interpreting Studies and the mastery of consecutive interpreting techniques;
- demonstrate broad knowledge in politics, business and current affairs which is relevant to their professional preparedness;
- take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others, as well as to work in a team and cope under stress.

Syllabus

During practical classes in conference rooms, emphasis will be placed on intensive practice of consecutive interpretation which will involve the use of authentic material including bilateral discussions on a variety of topics between native speakers of the practised languages as well as live or pre-recorded speeches of 4-5 minutes.

A range of exercises aimed at developing memory, note-taking, enunciation and generally good presentational skills will be offered to students during 10 1-hour sessions in mixed-language groups.

As group learning (i.e. mixed-language group) sessions are jointly taught across all languages, students, whether working with one foreign language or two, attend a total of 10 sessions.

Private study

- Intensive practice in one's own and mixed language groups of consecutive and bilateral interpreting with materials available on-line and in the resources library.
- Memory training and development of presentation skills: preparation of presentations in languages A and B or practice from two C (passive) languages on a topic of the week.
- Practice of interpretation with note-taking in one's own and mixed language groups from presentations prepared by peers and from pre-recorded material.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- The progress of professional competence will be monitored throughout the year by providing regular feedback on student performance in classes.
- Feedback sheet is available to students.
