Module summary
The LCS Year Abroad is compulsory for all students on a Single Honours or Joint Honours degree programme with at least one language. In some subject areas it takes place in the second year of the degree (between Levels 1 and 2); in others it takes place in the third year (between Levels 2 and 3). The choice of activities depends on the country of destination. Students taking the BA Modern Languages (i.e. two languages taught to degree level) will normally spend most of their Year Abroad in one country. If one of these languages is being learnt ab initio, they will normally spend their Year Abroad in a country where this language is spoken.Objectives
The LCS Year abroad will take one of three forms, depending on the student’s level and the country of destination:study at a partner institution; work placement; working as an English language assistant
or a combination of two of the above.
During this part of their degree programme, students will have the opportunity to:
- make substantial linguistic progress, over a wide range of registers, in respect of the target language;
- face the linguistic, intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country;
- acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the target language;
- develop the social/personal/transferable skills necessary for gaining maximum benefit from living in a different community;
- seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within the target culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future employment.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the year abroad, students should have:
1) improved their language proficiency;
2) improved their knowledge and understanding of their host country;
3) understood how their residence abroad has helped them to develop a range of transferable skills.
Skills outcomes
Subject-specific skills will vary depending on the subject’s country/countries of destination and their activity during the Year Abroad.
Syllabus
Due to the varied opportunities for the year abroad, the 'syllabus' will differ from student to student. Students should make themselves familiar with the requirements for the year abroad as given in the LCS Year Abroad Handbook and, for study placements, Learning Contract. The handbook explains in detail what students need to do in order to pass the year abroad according to their destination country and combination of activities.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will be supported by a named member of academic staff throughout the year. They will have three 30-minute TEAMS tutorials with them (in November, January and April). This will enable students to show their progress and discuss any issues.LO3 - “understood how their residence abroad has helped them to develop a range of transferable skills” - can be assessed as part of formative feedback in the tutorials but is not required for the summative assessment.
Methods of assessment
Coursework
Assessment type | Notes | % of formal assessment |
Written Work | A portfolio of written work, either in English or the target language, depending on student’s level. 1000 words (or equivalent). | 50.00 |
Online Assessment | A 5-minute online oral discussion with a member of academic staff (or equivalent). | 50.00 |
Total percentage (Assessment Coursework) | 100.00 |
Every student on the LCS Year Abroad is required to complete this portfolio of written work. The short length (1000 words) emphasizes the quality of the writing. The subject matter and choice of language will depend on the destination and year of study. Every student is also expected to show evidence of their ability in the spoken language in a 5-minute online oral discussion with a member of staff towards the end of their Year Abroad. Resits in August will take the same format for both activities.
