Module summary

This module allows students to pursue an independent research project in an area of music such as musicology, composition, music psychology, aesthetics, archival studies, music technology or performance. Projects are agreed in negotiation with an appointed supervisor, and in most cases students will attend teaching on an existing module to develop relevant skills and knowledge. Students are supported by a combination of group seminars and individual supervisions, and devise the criteria on which the research project is to be assessed in consultation with staff.

Objectives

The Individual Project module aims to give students the opportunity to pursue a project in an area of music in which they have a strong interest. Students will gain experience of devising and carrying out a small research project, formulating the nature of both the project aims and the format of the submission in consultation with a supervisor.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will:
• Demonstrate project management skills such as time management, the formulation and communication of project outcomes, goal-oriented working, flexibility, problem-solving skills, presentation skills, evaluation skills
• Demonstrate the ability to work independently, including advanced self-evaluation skills, initiative and critical thinking
• Demonstrate the ability to draw from previously learned and recently acquired knowledge, including contextual knowledge, research techniques, methodologies and the application of theories
• Communicate findings and ideas in coherent and logical ways appropriate to the form of assessment

Syllabus

In negotiation with the module leader, and other members of staff as appropriate, the student devises an independent project which is normally linked to a specific module offered in the School of Music. Where this link exists the student is required to attend classes for this chosen module; where the project is devised independently of a taught module the student will normally have additional meetings with their supervisor to ensure the project develops suitably across the module.

Private study

Devising, planning, discussing the project and producing statements of intent and learning contract: 75 hours
Researching and locating appropriate sources, online learning, private preparation, planning and executing the project, as appropriate for the discipline: 210 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive feedback during the seminar and supervisions as their project progresses, and will also receive feedback on their project proposal, submitted towards the start of the module.
