Pre-requisite qualifications

Students not on the MMus Performance programme who wish to be considered for this module should be experienced performers; they will be asked to provide a DVD recording or to audition to make sure that they are of a suitable performing standard.

Module summary

On this module students will identify a solo or ensemble performance project related to their repertoire interests or career goals, for which they will get tutorial support. Assessment will be via a performance event (60%) supported by a written self-assessment of the project (20%), and coursework documenting the process of preparing for the performance (20%). Objectives

The module enables students to demonstrate the development of their identified performance skills in concerted groups (large-scale and chamber) and/or the study of practical performance or conducting skills (rehearsal and presentation) and/or instrumental pedagogy and/or critical evaluation of independent experiential or work-based learning (choice of subject/s as appropriate to the individual student, negotiated with staff members). Students will be encouraged to place their performance interests within a wider musicological, historical, psychological, technological and cultural context.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Deliver a performance-related project related to their repertoire interests or career aspirations.
2. Document preparations for their performance-related project appropriately.
3. Demonstrate an awareness of relevant contexts surrounding their project, whether historical, cultural, or in terms of specific performance traditions.
4. Apply appropriate self-criticism in when reflecting on the project

Skills outcomes
This module allows students to develop an awareness of performance as a process and the importance of documenting that process, organisational skills, and a range of musical skills (both in terms of musical technique and interpretation) relevant to their particular project.

Syllabus

Students will be supported through a series of tutorials, and vocal/instrumental lessons where appropriate, leading to the delivery of a distinctive performance event.

Private study

Private study and independent learning can involve a range of activities: it may involve ensemble activity or seminars as appropriate to individuals. It may also involve the study of practical performance skills (rehearsal and presentation), instrument pedagogy, critical evaluation of independent experiential or work-based learning, and detailed research as part of the project (supported by primary and secondary source materials, as appropriate), together with reading and studying the Minerva pages for the module which include the range of documentation associated with it: 240 hours
Preparation of written work (statement of intent, initial and final learning contracts, Personal review of Learning): 50 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The series of 4 tutorials allows students to discuss the development of their project, as part of the preparatory process for the performance.

The outcome normally includes rehearsals/ preparation/ lessons leading to a performance, and will include a Personal Review of Learning and other supporting evidence. An indicative word length would be 2000-3000 words, where the Personal Review supports an agreed outcome such as a performance or a written submission. Where the Personal Review is the only outcome of the Project, in the case of work-based or experiential learning, the guide length is 5000-6000 words, excluding supporting material.
