Module summary

This module will provide a foundation and a vocabulary of ideas and concepts, an understanding of the key issues in international health.The students will also develop an understanding of the key players in international health, and of the historical developments, current priorities, and emerging issues, and how these shape international health practice.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to introduce the students to key international health issues, the essentials of basic epidemiology, and the key vocabulary and concepts of international health, as well as to provide a broad understanding of the main actors in international health.

On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate detailed understanding of global patterns of ill-health, with particular reference to priority communicable and non-communicable diseases
- demonstrate detailed understanding of the burden of disease and transition
- relate key global health issues to a critical understanding of health determinants in different international contexts
- critically discuss the roles of key actors in international health

Learning outcomes
- Students will be able to use core epidemiological tools and concepts to describe and compare health status and key trends in international health.
- Students will be able to use core analytical tools to examine the determinants of health in different health contexts.

Skills outcomes
- Be able to critically analyse the impact of the social, economic and political factors on the distribution and spread of diseases of international health importance;
- Be able to access and use information on international health issues;
- Be able to communicate information and ideas to others, verbally and non-verbally.

Syllabus

Outline syllabus of the module will cover the following topics/issues:

1. Introduction to key issues in international health
2. Determinants of health
3. Global patterns of ill-health
4. Introduction to epidemiology - measuring and describing health
5. Priority communicable diseases
6. Priority non-communicable diseases
7. Working together to improve international health: key actors, partnerships and special programmes
