Objectives

On completion of this module, the student should be able to:
- follow the research process
- develop appropriate research methodologies
- use a variety of common qualitative and quantitative data collection methods
- analyse data collected using qualitative and quantitative methods
- assess strengths and weaknesses of research findings
- present results
- prepare a research proposal.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, the student should be able to:

- Research methods appropriate for investigating problems related to health service delivery in low income countries.

- Critical appraisal of published research.

- Problem selection and analysis
- Research objectives
- Planning research
- Quantitative and qualitative methods; variable definition
- Sampling
- Questionnaire design
- Simple analysis of quantitative data, including differences between groups and association between variables
- Qualitative methods, including open interviews, FGDs, policy analysis
- Assessing strengths and weaknesses of findings
- Presenting results
- Proposal writing.
