Module summary
This module is designed to help students develop and demonstrate the skills required to carry out a substantial individual project in a chosen aspect of Artificial Intelligence. Core skills for conducting the individual project are developed through guided online learning.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- demonstrate an in-depth comprehension of the topics/issues relevant to the AI project;
- select and apply the appropriate AI methods for their chosen AI project area;
- demonstrate independent application of the knowledge, methods and techniques that have been acquired during the AI MSc programme in producing a solution in the project;
- Normally some elements of software implementation are expected;
- demonstrate skills in project management and presentation;
- produce a critical evaluation on the outcome of the project;
- demonstrate proficiency in written communications;
- understand how to make use of a wide range of information sources.
Learning outcomes

Syllabus
Indicative syllabus includes:
- The process of planning and conducting a Masters project.
- Literature review and project working methods.
- Writing up the project report.
- Regular meetings with student group and supervisor(s) to discuss project work;
- where appropriate, meetings with external 'project owner' to ascertain direction and scope of project,
- evaluation of results.

Private study
Students will work through interactive learning resources and reflective activities in Minerva relating to the project process..Background reading on supporting technical and theoretical aspects.
Project literature review work using on-line resources and publications.
Design, implementation, testing and evaluation of a solution to the AI problem.
Preparation of the report.
Students will be placed in groups for peer support and discussion. A discussion forum will be maintained that runs throughout the module to allow students to ask questions of the supervisor(s) and of peers, enabling answers to common questions to be shared with the group.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
During the initial phase when students work through the online materials:- The digital learning materials will provide regular opportunities for participants to check their understanding and gain feedback.
- The associated webinars and discussion forums will provide further opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors.
The 6 hours supervision will enable students to receive formative feedback from their supervisor on key aspects of the research project (i.e., feasibility and suitability of the research question, research methodology, potential key pieces of literature).
After the midpoint of the module, students will have the opportunity to give a formative presentation which will provide feedback ahead of the preparation of the final report.

Students who fail their project are given the opportunity to improve the original submission to a pass standard capped at 50%. If a student must re-submit due to a plagiarism penalty, they are required to complete a new project.
