Module summary

This module will explore principles and practice in digital design, and introduce graphical and typographical design used in interfaces, information design and interaction design at advanced level. When used together, those fields create effective, efficient, engaging and persuasive solutions for digital designs. Graphic and Typographic Designs help designs reach a wider audience by communicating the message with clarity, evoking emotion, and increasing inclusivity. Besides, they help interfaces ensure user experiences flow smoothly; from easy readability to finding desired information quickly. Information Design helps people to access, understand, use, learn, and apply information. Interactive designs allow for better ways of engaging with interactive systems through effective interfaces. Through the module, covering areas such as User Experience Design (UX) and User Interface Design (UI) will contribute to both aesthetic and functional design implementations. Students will advance their knowledge through case studies and design practice. This module builds on the teaching provided in the programme’s foundation modules and should be undertaken following carousel one.

Objectives

This module will give students the opportunity to develop a range of essential skills in digital design. These include interpreting the brief, understanding and emphasising user needs, conducting user research, evaluating results, design creation as well as independent working and project management. These skills will be achieved through: 

1. Studying theoretical issues and cases associated with digital design at an advanced level.
2. Responding to given briefs, apply design thinking and creativity via practical activities and create design solutions.
3. Creating digital solutions for design briefs.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Analyse and adapt current challenges, theories and principles of digital design at an advanced level.
2. Undertake user research on the development of user interface and experience.
3. Design and develop effective design solutions in response to a specific brief and problem.
4. Evaluate design solutions with the audience.

Private study

Independent online learning (12 hours):
Online learning materials provide links to appropriate journal papers, books, videos and websites. Students need to plan their own time to study these instructional and supporting materials independently before and after synchronised sessions.

To gain confidence to develop and articulate their own ideas, students will engage in private study (120 hours):
Independent research: 22 hours
Preparation and evaluation of assessed work: 98 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Online learning materials will provide regular opportunity for students to check their understanding (for example through formative MCQs with automated feedback). Regular group activity embedded into learning will allow self and peer assessment providing opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutor.

The individual unit webinars and discussion forums provide opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors. Formative feedback will be given on week 3 on a student’s progress on the paper prototype design, then on week 6 on user interface design.
