Module summary

This module will help students develop speculative thinking abilities related to a given brief and apply their speculative design practice. It will introduce design principles and theories of emerging technologies for a better understanding of digital design trends and application areas. Students will learn the basics of human-computer interaction and emerging technologies such as extended reality (VR, AR, MR), haptic/tangible interfaces, gesture-based interfaces, wearable technologies, conversational user experience, and internet of things. They will then explore innovative solutions in sample scenarios. This module builds on the teaching provided in the programme's foundation modules and should be undertaken following carousel one.

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to:

1. Identify emerging technologies and evaluate them in trend analysis.
2. Learn design principles and theories on current digital design trends.
3. Explore innovative design and technology by developing solutions to a set brief.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Evaluate emerging digital design trends and technologies together with their core concepts and principles.
2. Critically speculate on the foreseen design challenges related to the given brief.
3. Apply the speculative design practice to ideate a digital design solution taking into consideration principles and theories associated with the design trends and technologies in use.

Private study

Independent online learning: 12 hours

Each online seminar is supported by learning materials such as video, journal papers, books, and websites. Students need to plan their own time to study these instructional and supporting materials independently before and after synchronised sessions.

To gain confidence to develop and articulate their own ideas, students will engage in private study (120 hours):
- Independent research: 40 hours
- Preparation and evaluation of assessed outcomes: 80 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Online learning materials will provide regular opportunity for students to check their understanding (for example through formative MCQs with automated feedback). Regular group activity embedded into learning will allow self and peer assessment providing opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutor

The individual unit webinars and discussion forums provide opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors. Formative feedback will be given in the formal classes and asynchronous discussion forums each week to reflect a student’s progress on the assignment.
