Module summary

This module seeks to deepen students’ understanding of innovation practice in a business context. It provides insight into a range a range of tools which can support their innovation process. Students will learn to understand the impact of innovation and the challenges of delivering innovation in an Engineering environment. Students will learn to use reflective practice to critically evaluate current innovation practice. They will understand the contextual nature of innovation and how product, people and process have an impact on innovation.

Objectives

This module seeks to broaden students’ understanding of innovation practice in an engineering business context. It exposes students to a range of tools which can support their innovation process and deepen their understanding of the impact of innovation and the challenges of delivering innovation.

Students will learn how to use reflective practice to critically evaluate current innovation methodologies and understand the contextual nature of innovation. They will be taught to appreciate how product, people and process have an impact on innovation.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:-

1 Understand the different types and levels of innovation in the Engineering sector.
2 Understand the complexities of managing an innovation process.
3 Appreciate the commercial impact of innovation.
4 Appreciate how design and design thinking can support the development of innovation activity within a business or organisation.
5 Demonstrate knowledge of a range of tools and techniques that support innovation.
6 Critically reflect on innovation management practices within a business context.
7. Develop an appreciation of the value of design policy.

Skills outcomes
The ability to apply a structured approach to the introduction of new products in the Engineering sector.

The skills needed to work as a group to develop a detailed plan to implement a product innovation in a specific engineering sector.

The ability to match creativity and design skills with formal methods for product innovation and evaluation in an Engineering context.


Syllabus

1. Innovation theory.
2. Types and levels of innovation in Engineering.
3. People, process and product in the innovation process.
4. Business case studies across a range of Engineering sectors.
5. Innovation process and practice across a range of business sectors.
6. Design and creativity.

Case studies of product innovation will be used, where appropriate, to illustrate these principles in an Engineering context.

Private study

Private study will include directed reading and self-directed research in support of learning activities and discussions, as well as in preparation for assessments.

Independent online learning involves non-facilitated directed learning. Students will work through bespoke interactive learning resources and reflective activities in the VLE.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Online learning materials will provide regular opportunity for students to check their understanding (for example through formative MCQs with automated feedback). Regular group activity embedded into learning will allow self and peer assessment providing opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors.

These activities are part of the teaching and learning methods and are not to be considered as formative assessments.
