Module summary
A problem based design studio module with a number of projects which challenge the student to apply and combine their skills and learning from this module and another modules to develop and communicate creative solutions to complex problems.Objectives
This module introduces key design methods and assesses students’ ability to apply their learning from across the course through practical design work.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Communicate conceptual and detail design ideas (including tolerancing information for manufacturing) by means of sketches, CAD and DTP software;
2. Communicate conceptual and detail design ideas by means of multimedia software;
3. Use and develop frameworks to identify and describe emerging sociocultural trends, including sustainability, and understand the relevance of such to the designer;
4. Design electro-mechanical products utilising standard and/or specialised parts in response to specific design constraints;
5. Produce fit for purpose 3D models, using CAD software, that are suitable for downstream manufacturing processes such as CNC machining and rapid prototyping;
6. Create realistic working prototypes suitable for presentation using available resources as appropriate;
7. Recognise and discuss standard theory related to design aesthetics and apply specific elements in their own work;
8. Appreciate the factors that can affect team performance.
9. Students will continue to operate effectively as a member of a small collocated team and present their design work orally using audio visual aids where appropriate.
Engineering Council Learning Outcomes
SM1i - Knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles underpinning relevant technologies, and their evolution
SM2i - Knowledge and understanding of mathematics and an awareness of statistical methods necessary to support application of key engineering principles
EA1i - Ability to monitor, interpret and apply the results of analysis and modelling in order to bring about continuous improvement
D1i - Be aware of business, customer and user needs, including considerations such as the wider engineering context, public perception and aesthetics
D2i - Define the problem identifying any constraints including environmental and sustainability limitations; ethical, health, safety, security and risk issues; intellectual property; codes of practice and standards
D3 - Work with information that may be incomplete or uncertain and be aware that this may affect the design
D4i - Apply problem-solving skills, technical knowledge and understanding to create or adapt designs solutions that are fit for purpose including operation, maintenance, reliability etc
D5i - Manage the design process, including cost drivers, and evaluate outcomes
D6 - Communicate their work to technical and non-technical audiences
EL1 - Understanding of the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in engineering and a knowledge of professional codes of conduct
EL2 - Knowledge and understanding of the commercial, economic and social context of engineering processes
EL4i - Understanding of the requirement for engineering activities to promote sustainable development
P1i - Knowledge of contexts in which engineering knowledge can be applied (eg operations and management, application and development of technology, etc)
P2i - Understanding of and ability to use relevant materials, equipment, tools, processes, or products
P3i - Knowledge and understanding of workshop and laboratory practice
P11i - Awareness of team roles and the ability to work as a member of an engineering team
G1 - Apply their skills in problem solving, communication, information retrieval, working with others and the effective use of general IT facilities

Syllabus
This module will build on the knowledge and skills acquired in level 1 and provide opportunity for the acquisition of new knowledge and skills. This will include:
- Application of learning from other modules to design projects;
- Ethical considerations in product design;
- Team performance issues;
- Trend forecasting and sustainable design;
- Prototyping and testing;
- Portfolio Development and Presentation.
This is the level 2 project core through which students will draw together learning form a range of disciplines and apply it to design projects.
Projects in 3 areas will typically be completed:
- sustainability and radical design
- service design
- prototyping and communication

Private study
Students are expected to watch and read through online materials for each project prior to face-to-face lectures so that lectures can focus on interactive activities.Private study is carried out within each of the design projects and are independently led by the students.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
An online discussion board will be monitored during specified times each week. In addition, students will have opportunities for formative feedback in design reviews and interactive activities that will be a part of the lectures and in the Service Design project Challenge Day workshop that is classified as a workshop in the contact time matrix.Methods of assessment
