Objectives

This module introduces students to standards and industry toolkits related to User Centred Design, and gives them practical experience of applying these to real world problems.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- Name and give examples of relevant British and International Standards relating to user centred design;
- Name and give examples of user centred design methods currently applied in the design industry;
- Give examples of the application of user-centred design in product development ;
- Select and apply appropriate standards and methods to engage users in a design process;
- Critically reflect upon the quality of user engagement in a design process.

Syllabus

This module introduces students to a range of standards and methods for user centred design, and gives them experience of applying them. This will not be exhaustive, and students will be encouraged to research additional methods. The intention is rather to introduce students to the range of methods available, and to discuss some of the challenges involved. Methods covered will include British and International Standards relating to user-centred design; toolkits related to user centred design (for example, the Cambridge Inclusive Design Toolkit, the IDEO human centred design toolkit) and practical tools used (for example, personas and empathy exercises). Students will be introduced to a selection of these, research them in more detail, practice applying them under staff supervision and apply their findings through a series of iterative design projects.

Private study

Private study will comprise of six activities areas: Research, ideation, sketching, prototyping, and preparation of final presentation materials.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each students progress will be reviewed weekly during the course of the interactive lectures, during which critique will be provided by the teaching staff, as well as peer-review from the other students. This will give the opportunity to ensure that students are going in the right direction and address any concerns as the project progresses. The week four assignment will act as a gateway review, to ensure that students have undertaken a suitable amount of work in the early stages of the module, and that they have a credible plan for undertaking the second assignment.
