Module summary

This module explores research methods in the fields of theatre and performance in the context of the cultural industries. You will be introduced to a range of contemporary case studies and will engage with a broad range of disciplinary perspectives, theories and research methods that represent both traditional and innovative practice. You will be required to reflect on your own development as a researcher/practitioner and undertake detailed plans that will define your final year of study.

Objectives

This module will
- enable an understanding of research methodologies in the Creative and Cultural Industries with particular attention to their use in theatre and performance;
- enable students to access, select and interpret theatre and performance research;
- enable students to apply academic research skills with growing competence;
- enable students to critically utilise and evaluate different methods of research enquiry and demonstrate the ability to critique research findings;
- enable students to articulate their growing capacity as practitioners through documentation and reflection on their own practice;
- allow students to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. the ability to understand and articulate key concepts and theories that underpin research methodologies.
2. understanding of a range of research methods in the Arts and Cultural Industries and their appropriate application in research projects in theatre and performance.
3. the ability to critically analyse, synthesise and appraise research outcomes by forming coherent arguments.
4. the ability to search for, evaluate and use appropriate and relevant information sources to help strengthen the quality of academic work and independent research.
5. the ability to articulate and reflect critically on their own developing practice and research activities.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
6. The ability to recognise and express knowledge and understanding and how it relates to personal experience and to demonstrate learning and growth from the experience.
7. The ability to use the oral, written, auditory, and visual language proficiency needed to be able to learn effectively and demonstrate understanding.


Syllabus

Lectures that explore major research methodologies (may include, but not limited to, Practice-led Research, Theory-led Research, Empirical Research, Challenge-led Research, Ethics in Research) and modes of reflection (may include, but not limited to, Reflective Practice, Ethics in Performance Practice, Documentation of Practice, Live Theatre Evaluation, Critical Reflection, Reflexive Learning) are supported by accompanying seminars or workshops. Seminars to be led by module tutors, workshops to be led by external practitioners or academics.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Monitoring of student progression will be possible through 2 hour seminar discussions weekly (including a formative skills audit seminar session) and individual tutorials centred on portfolio development and self-reflection (0.5 hours per student).
