Module summary
This externally-facing module combines practice and theory to explore socially engaged modes of performance, partnership engagement, and community interaction. Encompassing a variety of performance methodologies and offering the opportunity to work with one or more organisations, the module produces student-led work in collaboration with professional partners in Leeds. Assessment is a 100% practice/performative element (which may, for example, take the form of a theatrical performance, an educational workshop or an installation).Objectives
• The module generates a chance for students to apply creative, performance and collaborative skills in negotiation with a live project brief generated with project partners.• Students will need to explore and develop a range of approaches to devising work within a group collaborative process and for a specific socially-engaged brief.
• Together, they will create work for a specific audience in negotiation with an external organisation and a client brief, applying creative and organisational skills in a new context.
• The assessment will include demonstrating understanding of the context(s) and potential impact (e.g.in relation to wider socio-economic and political contexts) for applied and socially-engaged performance in relation to the specified externally-facing work.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

2. Understand the context for specific work within applied and socially-engaged performance and negotiate a brief to meet the needs of particular audiences, and/or partner organisations;
3. Realise performance work to an appropriate level to meet the needs of specific partners/groups;
4. Evaluate the outcome in the light of stated intentions
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Demonstrating Creativity and Innovation: conceptualise and apply innovative and creative solutions to challenges
6. Teamwork and Communication: collaborate effectively with diverse groups, articulating ideas clearly and responding constructively to feedback.
7. Reflective Practice: critically evaluate your own academic work and thought processes, identifying areas for personal development.
Syllabus
The module builds on the collaborative practices developed at level 1 to develop a performance or workshop outcome for a specific context. Students will bring their specialist skills to a collaborative performance project which will emerge through a negotiated brief and specific timescale.
Students will investigate the needs of specific audiences and will undertake research towards a negotiated brief. Students will define and develop appropriate skills through a collaborative performance process culminating in a specific performance event. This might take the form of a performance and/ or workshop activity for the partner organisation. Formative feedback will occur in weekly sessions as a foundational competency in collaborative performance practice, and are also be built into partner pitches.
Students will develop evaluation methodologies in order which evidences the project to which they are attached and evaluates the project's effectiveness in relation to its stated aims. A key part of their reflection in this respect will be an appreciation of the socio-economic, cultural and political contexts in which the various organisations function. This will take the form of small group meeting after the performance/ outcome.
Under the supervision of tutors, small groups of students will work to develop and realise a performance (or socially engaged project) through integrating the skills of individuals within the team. Whether scripted or devised, the process of collaboration and negotiation between individuals is integral to all stages of the development process, and the work should reflect this. The module will culminate in an assessed performance/ presentation in a specified location (potentially off campus).
