Module summary
In this module you will embark on a research enquiry pertinent to performance and the cultural industries. You will choose a current topic to explore, design research questions, select appropriate methods, undertake ethical approval, and present your findings following appropriate academic conventions either in written form, or through performance presentation with an accompanying written document.Objectives
Students successfully completing this module will have developed:• knowledge and understanding of research skills allowing each student to identify a research topic and question/s, identify appropriate methods to address the question/s and pursue those methods as an independent scholar.
• Ability to plan and manage a range of independent research tasks including reviewing existing knowledge, undertaking ethical review, gathering ‘data’ in a range of forms appropriate to the subject area (which may include interviews, surveys, practice and reflection), analysis of data, and presentation of findings.
• Communicate findings through considering structure, coherence and clarity of their work and making confident use of academic conventions in written and practical forms (as relevant)
• Knowledge specific to the particular agreed area of study/theme/question they have chosen to investigate.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Define an area of study and generate appropriate research questions
2. Devise and carry out independent research with tutorial support and guidance
3. Select and deploy research method (s) appropriate to a particular study
4. Demonstrate an ability to critically synthesise knowledge and understanding aligned with the particular field/s of investigation and range of materials
5. Demonstrate an ability to contextualise and interpret the findings of the study in relation to development in the particular field/s of practice.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
6 Critical Thinking (Work Ready Skills, Academic Skills): apply critical thinking strategies to academic challenges, evaluating arguments, solving complex problems, and making reasoned decisions based on evidence and sound reasoning.
7. Ethics (Academic Skills): demonstrate a thorough understanding of ethical principles and their application in academic contexts, recognising the impact of ethical decision-making in scholarly pursuits.
8. Academic Integrity (Academic Skills): exemplify the principles of academic integrity, producing original work, properly attributing sources, and adhering to the standards of academic honesty in all educational activities.
