Module summary

On this module, you will negotiate a programme of independent work either individually or in small groups, building on knowledge and skills developed during previous levels as the basis for future employability and educational opportunities. The schedule of work typically involves studio-based investigation and/or work in the field, individual reading and research as well as self-directed group work, agreed via a formal Learning Agreement with supervising tutors.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...negotiate a programme of independent research, creative investigation and/or performance work individually or within a small group, recorded in a formal Learning Agreement at the outset of the project to be undertaken;build on knowledge and skills developed during previous levels as the basis for future employability and educational opportunities;present the outcomes of the independent practice in forms appropriate to the chosen area of enquiry, employing relevant and effective support materials and, where appropriate, technology.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. contextualise an independent programme of work with reference to an appropriate range of theoretical perspectives and methodologies;
2. evaluate the inter-relationships between independent practices and (i) those of the professional world; (ii) theoretical and critical perspectives;
3. understand the process of negotiating a project through a formal Learning Agreement, from initial aims through to the assessment of the final outcome;
4. reflect critically and report formally on the progress and execution of the work at key stages of the process.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Develop a programme of work through a formal Learning Agreement setting out aims, resources and timetable of the project.
6. Present the results of a programme of creative work individually or in collaboration with others, in a form appropriate to the target audience and performance context.

Syllabus

Under tutorial supervision, students will be required to explore a specified area of performance practice creatively, practically and critically, and to communicate the outcomes in an appropriate form of live presentation (which may include work in the field). Working in small groups or individually, students will choose an area of specialism or focused field of practical research from those introduced or developed during previous levels of study.Students will negotiate with tutors, in the form of a written Learning Agreement, an appropriate programme of investigative independent study and creative work within their chosen area of study. Students' critical understanding of the field should be implicit in the design, form and style of the outcome, which may combine presentation, work demonstration and performance elements. Students will be expected to take individual responsibility for the selection of material and the timetable of work across the semester, including regular showings of works-in-progress to supervising tutors. Supporting documentation appropriate to the particular exercise, reflecting on the individual role, working process and achievement, will be required of all students.
