Visiting students on their year abroad who request this module should be studying on a relevant programme or have a demonstrable interest in cultural sector practice (via present/previous study at A level equivalent or beyond, or through workplace experience or extra-curricular activities).This module is approved as a discovery module
Module summary
This module will equip you with a deeper understanding of Arts & Cultural Management as an academic discipline and professional practice. You will critically examine models of business and management theory applicable to cultural settings, exploring key theoretical, practical and ethical issues. You will learn about the professional context in the UK while considering differences across other national settings. You will gain key insights into how cultural organisations work, enhancing your employability.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to …1. Identify and critically evaluate the influences of key stakeholder groups in an arts or cultural organisation;
2. Present and critically discuss the key strategic and operational issues facing modern arts and cultural organisations;
3. Explain, theorize and critique the business model, management functions and organisational structure, culture and leadership of a real-life arts/cultural organisation;
4. Undertake a detailed strategic analysis of an arts or cultural organisation, which compares, contrasts and synthesizes the academic theory with professional practice.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Critical engagement with theories, tools, principles and frameworks pertaining to the academic field of Arts and Cultural Management;
2. Understanding of the management functions and practices necessary for an arts or cultural organisation to produce and present creative work;
3. Ablity to analyse strategic and operational challenges facing arts managers and cultural leaders (e.g. fundraising and resource management; ethical governance; audience development; artist management; stakeholder management).
4. Critical engagement with business strategy as applied to arts and cultural organisations.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Researching, organising and persuasively communicating information across a range of formats and media.
2. Formulation of evidence-based arguments supported by sound reasoning.
3. Prioritising and managing time well to meet deadlines.
Syllabus
We will explore and critique the core theories, tools, principles and frameworks relating to Arts and Cultural Management, centring on the UK context while considering alternate practices elsewhere, investigating the strategic and operational challenges facing arts managers and cultural leaders. Indicative topics include:

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students’ progress will be monitored both formatively through class discussion and summatively through their student-led seminars, which will highlight any serious engagement or learning issues before students embark on their assessed case studies. The two group tutorials will also provide a good insight into progress and provide additional support where it is needed.Methods of assessment
