Module summary
This module encourages a creative approach to the process of developing an initial business startup idea to a complete business model in the arts and creative industries. Underpinned by desk-based research and reading the business model provides the starting point from which to help students plan their efforts for future business development and opportunity recognition. Each week a workshop approach will help students develop each component of their business models. This will form a 2000-2500 word business proposal as the first assessment and supplemented by a 15min video pitch which the students will perform in order to ‘sell’ their proposal in an engaging and persuasive manner.Objectives
This module allows students to consider future professional and career planning through an understanding of the importance of the value proposition, business model generation and business planning in the start-up processIt will facilitate the creation of a rapid business plan supported both by creative thinking and desk-based assessment of customer/audience demographics, funding opportunities and key competitors in the chosen area of the arts. It will allow students to apply entrepreneurship frameworks and theories to assess viability of the business idea with an emphasis on social and creative enterprise.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this module, students will have acquired:
1. An ability to locate their understanding of business start-up within the arts and cultural industries contexts informed by policy, news media, funding opportunities and academic literature;
2. A knowledge of start-up principles, business model development and planning a new business idea;
3. The ability to apply entrepreneurship literature and theory to the process of developing a start-up idea and relating this to their own professional future planning;

This module is concerned with providing theoretical and practice-informed frameworks and support for those students interested in developing their start-up ideas into tangible business models. This will be supported by relevant academic and professional literature covering key areas such as; business model innovation; developing the value proposition; understanding audiences/customers, business channels; revenue streams; partnership; and feasibility and planning.
