Objectives

This module provides students with the theoretical and methodological knowledge that will enable them to carry out an independent piece of research in the field of Performance and Cultural Industries
The objectives of the module are to
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of the researcher within Performance and the Cultural Industries
- Identify and evaluate the principal methods and methodologies of research relevant to the field
- Identify ethical issues in research, and know how to apply/implement appropriate measures, including ethical review
- Carry out an independent research project in the field of Performance and Cultural Industries

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to
1. Devise, plan and execute an extended research project in the field of performance and cultural industries;
2. Identify and make effective use of appropriate methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and source materials to address a research question
3. Display an understanding of the relationship between enquiry, evidence and interpretation appropriate to their programme of study;
4. Demonstrate a degree of intellectual confidence and independence of thought
5. Present work to a high standard, in clear English and with appropriate apparatus.

Syllabus

Students develop their perspectives and skills as emergent researchers through a series of topic-based lectures, seminars and practical workshops. The module will include a number of lectures shared with students on other MAs within PCI. In the first semester, the student will attend 5 lecture, 5 seminars and 3 two-hour practical session. In the second term, they will attend 5 lectures, 5 seminars and 2 practical workshops on research methods. These lectures will cover topics of general relevance to Performance and Cultural Industries, and therefore to all postgraduates in the School. In addition, students will work exclusively within their own programme group, to allow time for focus on subject-specific research methodologies and approaches, in preparation for specialist Research Project proposals.

Generic lecture/seminar topics delivered in the first half of the module will include:

Contrasting forms and models of research in the Performing Arts and Cultural Industries;
The roles and responsibilities of Arts and Humanities research;
Ethical considerations in research;
Resources and data gathering/analysis;
Evaluating sources and writing a literature review;
Understanding the research process and developing a proposal

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In term 1, students will receive formative feedback during seminars and workshops. In term 2, will receive formative feedback on their proposal in tutorials, plus formative feedback on their ethics form and draft chapters of the research project in supervision meetings.
