Module summary

This module supports students in designing and carrying out an independent research project that responds to current debates and issues in Performance and the Cultural Industries. Through programme-related seminars and workshops, students discuss current research topics and methods appropriate to their programme field and are supported in developing research project proposals. Supervisors work with individual students to support them in developing and carrying out their project.

Objectives

The objectives of the module are to
1. Understand the roles and responsibilities of the researcher within Performance and the Cultural Industries
2. Apply relevant research methodologies and methods used in their specialist field
3. Identify ethical issues in research, and know how to apply/implement appropriate measures, including ethical review
4. Carry out an independent research project in the field of Performance and Cultural Industries

This module will be delivered through a combination of workshops, individual supervision and independent research.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Demonstrate critical understanding of key research methods and methodologies through practical application of research design as appropriate to programme learning and disciplinary specialisms.
2. Identify and critically engage with key sources and synthesise complex theoretical and practice-based ideas to demonstrate understanding of subject knowledge relevant to programme learning and disciplinary specialisms.
3. Demonstrate independence of thought in identifying and solving the ethical dimensions of research as relevant to programme learning and disciplinary specialisms.


Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

4. Devise, plan and execute an extended research project as relevant to subject specialism and programme of study
5. Identify and make effective use of appropriate methodologies, critical and theoretical frameworks, source materials and ethical concerns to address a defined project of research
6. Communicate research findings in an appropriate format, making use of relevant academic conventions.

Competence standards
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following competence standards:
1. Knowledge of key debates and research methods in their field and Performance and Cultural Industries more broadly
2.Ability to design a small independent research project in their field of study
3.Identify key scholarship related to a research area in their fireld of study
4.Communicate understanding and appropriate depth of analysis using academic conventions

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In term 1, students will receive formative feedback during seminars and workshops. In term 2, will receive formative feedback on their proposal in tutorials, plus formative feedback on their ethics form and draft chapters of the research project in supervision meetings.
