Module summary

This module evaluates and critiques the contemporary relationship of culture to social and economic conditions in cities, regions, and nations through examination of selected case studies. It examines the relationships of culture and place and interrogates strategies pursued by localities and governments to promote culture.

Objectives

To develop a critical knowledge of the relationship of culture to social and economic conditions through the examination of selected case studies

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
1. understand and critique key debates concerning the relationship of culture to social and economic conditions at different scales;
2. examine and critique the political and ideological significance of culture within policy;
3. apply this knowledge to selected case studies;
4. present their analyses through mapping and written essays.

Syllabus

The module introduces theories of the relationship of culture to social and economic conditions at different scales, most typically cities, regions, and nations. Through case studies that include primary research conducted by researchers from the School and elsewhere, students will analyse and the relationships of culture and place. Topics and debates will selected in response to current research and contemporary events, but may include:
• Culture-led urban policy
• Culture and sustainability
• The rural dimension
• The politics of creativity
• Culture, place and branding
• Culture, development and diversity
• Cultural tourism
Students are introduced to these topics through lectures and seminars supported by selected reading material.
