Module summary
On this module you will examine the relationships of culture and place, and interrogate the culture-led strategies pursued by localities and governments. You will evaluate and critique the contemporary relationship of culture to social and economic conditions in cities, regions, and nations.Objectives
You will be introduced to case studies to illustrate theories about the relationships between culture and place and how they influence the development of culture-led place-based policies and interventions. You will develop insight into the potential tensions of these strategies, and undertake work to explore and critique their rationale and impacts.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
1. understand and apply key debates concerning the relationships between culture and place;
2. identify and evaluate the potential impacts and tensions of culture-led place-based interventions;
3. plan and critique a place-based intervention;
4. investigate and critique a selected case study.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Critical Thinking – gathering a range of information from sources and making judgements about their reliability and importance
6. Ethics – apply judgement to understand the ethical implications of culture-led, place-based interventions
7. Systems Thinking – recognise and analyse the complex interrelationships inherent when discussing culture and place. For example, between people, culture, places, policy and economics
Syllabus
Topics and debates will be selected in response to current research and contemporary events, but may include:
• Culture-led urban policy
• Culture-led development and regeneration
• Creative clusters
• Gentrification
• Place branding
• Cultural tourism
Students are introduced to these topics through lectures and seminars supported by selected reading material.
