Module summary

The module enables post-graduate students from a range of disciplines to develop deeper understanding of the participation agenda which is of growing international importance. It will help students to better understand the role of cultural participation in society, as well as develop approaches to using techniques from cultural participation to bring about social change.Students will evaluate and analyse case studies of practice from within the cultural sector and develop their own participatory action.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to:
• Increase students understanding of theories relating to emerging discourses of participatory culture
• Enable students to critically evaluate case studies of cultural participation as practised in different countries and/or contexts
• Engage students in application of theory to practice by developing participatory methods and tools for research, interventions and cultural activities
• Model participatory practice through engaging students in co-design of content and assessments

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
• Understand the underlying principles of cultural rights and the role participation plays within this
• Analyse international policy discourses around increasing participation in culture
• Critique specific participatory approaches through examining case studies of practice
• Evaluate alternative models of participatory practice, in relation to their aims and outcomes
• Develop confidence in developing their own approach to participation in practice

Syllabus

In this module, students will develop their knowledge of the growing international and inter disciplinary discourse around cultural participation and participatory cultures, by studying theories of participation from fields as various as artistic practice, cultural studies, development studies and political science.
They will develop their own work either as participatory researchers or cultural workers through workshops which will allow students to take part in participatory approaches to learning and to practice, by co-designing assessments with tutors and peer reviewing each other’s practice.
Lectures will introduce foundation concepts such as individual agency, small change and social learning. Case studies will be examined in seminars to help students build their own toolkit for putting participation policy into practice. Workshops will then provide space for students to try out participatory techniques.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive formative feedback on the development of their ideas from tutor and peers in seminars and workshops. They will also co-design their summative assessments in seminars and through 1-2-1 tutorials.
