Module summary
The module enables postgraduate students from a range of disciplines to develop deeper understanding of the participation agenda which is of growing international importance. It will help students to better understand the role of cultural participation in society, as well as develop approaches to using techniques from cultural participation to develop their faciltate skills. Students will evaluate and analyse case studies of practice from within the cultural sector and develop their own participatory action.Objectives
The objectives of this module are to:• Increase students understanding of theories relating to emerging discourses of participatory culture
• Enable students to critically evaluate case studies of cultural participation as practised in different countries and/or contexts
• Engage students in application of theory to practice by developing participatory methods and tools for research, interventions and cultural activities
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1) Explore the underlying principles of cultural rights and the role participation plays within this
2) Evaluate alternative models of participatory practice, in relation to their aims and outcomes
3) Develop confidence in developing their own approach to participation in practice

Syllabus
In this module, students will develop their knowledge of the growing international and inter disciplinary discourse around cultural participation and participatory cultures, by studying theories of participation from fields as various as artistic practice, cultural studies, development studies and political science. They will develop their own work as participatory facilitators through workshops which will allow students to take part in participatory approaches to learning and to practice their own skills as facilitators .Lectures will introduce foundation concepts such as cultural capital and agency. Case studies will be examined in seminars to help students build their own toolkit for putting participation policy into practice. Workshops will then provide space for students to try out participatory techniques.

-The evidence base on rates of cultural participation
-Tools and techniques to increase participation

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The course is taught through a combination of lectures and seminars to introduce theory and workshops where students can experiment with their own ideas and develop their skills in facilitation through feedback s from tutor and peers.Methods of assessment

The resit for the facilitated workshop activity will require the student to submit a pre-recorded presentation of their plans to deliver a participatory activity. The resit for the reflection will require the student to use theory from the module to critically reflect on an example of a participatory activity
