Module summary
Through a series of workshops, this module will situate and critically analyse your practice in relation to key applied theatre practitioners and workshop techniques. It will provide a supportive environment in which you can explore, critique and evaluate applied theatre methodologies, and reflect on your creative development.You will have the opportunity to advance existing skills in facilitation and put them into practice by devising and leading your own series of applied theatre workshops.Objectives
You will:• Explore and critique a range of applied theatre workshop techniques and practices within a studio setting.
• Develop skills as effective facilitators of applied theatre practice and apply these skills in a professional setting in collaboration with an existing community group.
• Design, lead and evaluate a series of applied theatre workshops with an appreciation of the relationship between form, content and context.
• Critically reflect upon individual facilitation practice and its development.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. Critically reflect on a range of applied theatre practitioners and their work in a range of community contexts, including complexities of their respective applications.
2. Critically reflect on your individual facilitation practice, its respective development and where it is positioned in the wider applied theatre sector.
3. Plan appropriate workshop materials and evaluation exercises for a studio and community setting.
4. Utilise a range of facilitation skills for the delivery of applied theatre workshops.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, you will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Demonstrate leadership qualities in a studio and/or community capacity.
6. Undertake effective decision making in the development and delivery of creative exercises.
7. Conduct facilitation practice in an ethical and responsible manner as well as consider the ethical responsibility of practitioners studied.
8. Critically analyse and evaluate a range of applied theatre practices including personal practice.
9. Collaborate with peers to develop and critique creative work.
Syllabus
This module is split in to three separate sections; practical workshops, tutorials and fieldwork.
Practical workshops will focus on facilitation training, practitioner/practice study, working in the applied theatre sector and critical reflection. The aim of these sessions is for you to undertake a process that introduces advanced skills of facilitation to their application within a professional setting whilst being introduced to a range of core and innovative applied theatre practices. These sessions will be delivered by existing staff and visiting practitioners who are at the forefront of applied theatre practice.
Alongside practical sessions there are six individual tutorials that will be bespoke to your own practice as a facilitator. These tutorials will discuss reflections on practitioners studied, personal ideas on the application of practices as well as fieldwork and career aspirations.
The final component of this module is the fieldwork component. This will see you undertake a placement with an applied theatre company or community group over the course of the module. The fieldwork will provide you with an in-depth exposure to practice in the community. You will be supported in finding an appropriate company to undertake your fieldwork with.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will receive formative feedback throughout the practical sessions led by members of staff. The six tutorials are the scheduled activity for formative assessment in the module with module leader providing feedback on a student’s development.Methods of assessment

Due to the specific in-person and practical requirements of the observed workshop and its respective LOs, an alternate resit format isn’t available. The student will have an opportunity to organise and deliver a workshop as part of the August resit and if not possible, the student will have to resit as an internal student.
