Objectives

The objectives of this module are to enable students to:
• Undertake a sustained period of professional practice in the field of Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy, and achieve a series of pre-determined business and professional developmental outcomes, including evidence of successfully planning, implementing, analysing, reporting on and evaluating fundraising activities
• Engage in a sophisticated level of reflective practice, which illuminates and theorizes both everyday and strategic challenges of professional activity in the field of Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy, including the need to develop excellent leadership and inter-personal skills

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

• Apply qualitative methods to research the chosen the chosen issue/ problem/ project area

• Demonstrate a sound theoretical understanding of the theoretical context of the chosen issue/ problem/ project area

• Apply change management models, concepts and principles to effect a positive outcome

Skills outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should have developed their reflective practice skills and be able to critically reflect on how key principles of change management and project management relate and apply to the field of arts fundraising, philanthropy and leadership.

Syllabus

This is a work-based learning module. Participants are required to negotiate a tripartite learning contract with their university based mentor and their workplace mentor. The aim of the learning contract will be to identify a specific organisational problem, issue or project which the student is required to address under the supervision of the university mentor and with the guidance of the workplace mentor. The substantive theoretical content will therefore vary according to the focus of the issue/problem/ project chosen.

Private study

The module will be introduced at the Summer School residential and will be delivered through online support. Supporting materials will be provided electronically and regular contact will be maintained through distance learning methods. A range of materials relevant to the programme will be made available through the University of Leeds’ virtual learning environment (VLE), BlackBoard, to support participants through their study. Discussion rooms/ Learning Set areas will be made available for students to upload materials and share information and ideas about the programme and their projects. This is an essential part of the Work-Based Learning approach to study and its use will be strongly encouraged by the WBL University supervisor and workplace mentor, who will liaise on a regular basis by email to ensure good progress is being made.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Regular dates, times and duration of actual meetings with the Workplace Mentor will be agreed at the beginning of the relationship. Regular dates, times and duration of virtual meetings with the University Supervisor will also be agreed at this stage. The meetings may take place on a monthly basis so that the mentor can be brought up-to-date on progress. Extra meetings may be factored in at key times, such as before the submission of draft work. Specific guidelines will be supplied in the module handbook.
