Objectives

The assessment has two components:
1. Pass of all the co-requisite teaching modules. Doing so gives the students a minimum mark of 40% on this module.
2. A portfolio of other assessment items that generate a module mark that will be between 40 and 100%. This portfolio will consist of:
a. Two written open-notes synoptic examinations at the end of semester 2.
b. One computer-based invigilated examination at the end of semester 2.
c. A portfolio of assignments that will include laboratory reports, presentations and reflection.

These assessments span the programme learning outcomes for level 1. The content and specific skill learning outcomes will arise from the passing of verifiable indicators of threshold attainment in learning (VITALs). The synoptic learning outcomes will be assessed by the portfolio, particularly the synoptic use of knowledge and skills which are a requirement for IOP Accreditation.

• Ability to evaluate strengths and identify areas for development.
• Undertake experimental work to make accurate measurements of physical phenomena
• Understand and use appropriate techniques to design experiments.
• Ability to apply appropriate methods for error analysis and statistical significance.


Syllabus

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

2-hour formative exam in Semester One exam period.

Students will receive regular and immediate feedback from automatically marked assessments from the knowledge-based VITALs.
Students will receive regular and detailed feedback on laboratory and programming reports, and other related activities.
Students will take a mock/formative synoptic exam in semester 1 and receive individual feedback.

Resit is of the whole year Exam resit only available for students with mitigating circumstances for the exam. They will be allowed to progress and may resit the exam to improve their mark during the next academic year.
