Objectives
On completion of this module, students will have become acquainted with a central debate in contemporary metaphysics that provides a framework for further work in ontology (especially in PHIL3521 Being), and should be able to discern connections between semantic and ontological issues.Syllabus
This course will introduce the various issues of realism and anti-realism in contemporary metaphysics.
We will distinguish and relate various relevant issues within the broad headings of: existence and nature, truth and meaning, and mind-dependence and mind-independence.
We will consider how the realism issues unfold in a variety of cases such as the perceptible properties (shapes and colours), moral values, numbers, possibility and causation.
