Objectives
By the end of the module students should be able to:- describe the optical properties of birefringent media, including a mathematical description of the index ellipsoid
- describe the operation of various electro-optic modulators and discuss their purpose
- describe and perform calculations relating to second order nonlinear optical effects
- describe some third order nlo effects and their application
- describe the manipulation of materials using optical beams
- describe the scattering of single photons through a linear optics network
- have a basic understanding of the concept of photons
- model the creation of single photons by a two-level atom
- describe the time evolution of a two-level atom in the presence of a laser field.
Skills outcomes
Ability to model physical problems.

- Photonics
- Optical Anisotropy (Birefringence, Optical Indicatrix, Huygens construct)
- Modulation of Light (electro optic effect, acousto-optic effect, magneto optic effect)
- Nonlinear optics (Second Harmonic Generation, Coherence length, Phase Matching, Parametric effects, Third Order Effects, Materials)
- Manipulation of Materials using Optical Beams
- Introduction to Quantum Optics
- An introduction to single photon physics with applications
- A laser-driven two-level atom
- Spontaneous photon emission
- Einstein's rate equations.
