Module summary
This module will extend and deepen students’ awareness of challenges in global development such as poverty, health, hunger, education, work and environmental sustainability. Concepts such as development, rights, and gender are introduced and used as critical tools to critically evaluate the different interpretations of the causes of those challenges, and understand how a wide range of actors respond. Throughout the module students will develop their abilities to analyse, synthesise and communicate ideas and information in formats relevant to professional contexts.Objectives

Learning outcomes
1. Understanding of key contemporary challenges in global development across a range of country contexts
2. Demonstrated awareness and critical understanding of the roles and responses of relevant development actors to those challenges
3. Demonstrated awareness of, and ability to use, evaluate and compare a diverse range of relevant information and research resources, including academic analyses, ‘grey’ and other policy materials
4. Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas with clarity, coherence and persuasiveness in oral and written formats
Skills outcomes
Demonstrated awareness and critical understanding of the challenges facing global development actors at local, national and international levels in at least three regional contexts
Critical analytical skills related to the interdisciplinary nature of international development and communication
Syllabus
Weeks 1-2: Agencies of development
Weeks 3-11: Presentation and discussion of a flexible range of contemporary global development challenges and responses to them. An indicative list would include:
Insecure labour; conflict and disasters; migration; literacy and education; environment; HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases; food security; climate change; terrorism; trafficking.

Private study
Students to consult research literature, ‘grey’ and media resources to develop and deepen their insights into global challenges and understand responses to them.Students to meet independently in their allocated group to prepare for the presentation.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Seminar discussion and presentations will ensure students are up to speed with the weekly topics and seminar tutors will monitor for gaps in understanding and group discussions will help peer-to-peer learning. As well as deepening the week’s topic, the second lectures can be used each week to clarify any confusion and consolidate learning.Methods of assessment
