Module summary

In this module, students will be introduced to current debates in global political economy (GPE) and will develop the skills and knowledge to conduct critical political economy analysis. The module combines a focus on global political-economic structures, institutions and processes with attention to everyday experiences of capitalism. The module draws on insights from various academic disciplines to provide students with an interdisciplinary framework to conduct critical GPE analysis. Traditional and emerging approaches to GPE will be discussed, including perspectives from the Global South. Students will ground GPE concepts and theories in empirical case studies and their own lived experiences as students and workers. Themes covered in the module include labour, firms, housing, technology, environment, debt, and education. No economics or statistical training is required to take this module.

Objectives

This module will introduce students to global political economy (GPE) and equip them with the skills and knowledge to undertake critical GPE analysis. Students will be introduced to current GPE debates and explore GPE issues in diverse settings across the Global North and Global South. Particularly attention will be given to everyday GPE, and the lived experiences of the students enrolled on the module. Students will be introduced to core GPE concepts and theories that are explored in greater depth on the MA in Global Political Economy. The module will provide students with skills and knowledge for a wide range of public and private sector jobs, especially policy and analytical posts.

Syllabus

The module will start by introducing the field of GPE and current GPE debates. Students will then be introduced to core GPE concepts and theories and traditional and heterodox approaches to GPE.
Global political-economic structures, institutions and processes will also be explained in this part of the module. The remaining lectures will be dedicated to specific GPE themes, including the environment, labour, technology, and debt. Throughout the module, students will be expected to make connections between their own lived experiences and global political economy structures, institutions and processes.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will have the opportunity to work on their everyday GPE reports and final essays in seminars and discuss and receive feedback on their ideas from students and teachers on the module. Two one-hour skills sessions will be organized to help students prepare for researching and writing the report and the essay.
