Module summary

This module focuses on debates relating to the relationship between political and economic change in the world economy and the debates over resource use. It does so by examining a number of case studies that have been central to the ways in which developing countries have been incorporated into the world economy and the ways that the incorporation have affected the politics and society of the countries concerned. Students will be encouraged to 'adopt' a country and/or a resource to examine in depth and relate to themes of development strategy, politics and possibility for social transformation.- Part one of the course will involve a series of lectures that will provide the background and an introduction to the debates relating to resource use, debates about scarcity, resource depletion and rentierism. - Part two allows students to develop cases study knowledge and expertise.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
a) demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between political and economic change in the world economy
b) demonstrate an understanding of debates over resource use and environmental issues
c) demonstrate understanding of debates relating to development strategies linked with resource use
d) present a sustained written argument that draws on independent research
e) develop skills of oral communication.

Students will be required to prepare for discussions in seminars through extensive reading of sources listed on the module reading list. In addition to this, students should spend time preparing for their assessments which should include finding and using sources not listed on their reading list.
