Module summary

This module introduces theoretical and empirical approaches to the study and experience of insurgency and counterinsurgency.

Objectives

On completion, students should be able to:

a) Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the concept of insurgency, the typology of insurgencies, the origins and strategies of insurgents, group dynamics of insurgencies and the formation and impact of policies to counterinsurgency.
b) Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the history of insurgency in the 20th and 21st centuries.
c) Be able to appraise competing theories and interpretations of the concept, the origins and dynamics of insurgency and
counterinsurgency.
d) Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of theoretical and empirical literature on insurgency and allied fields.
e) Use analytical and presentation skills to present independent research on various insurgent groups and key themes in the study of the insurgent phenomenon.

Learning outcomes
Students should acquire an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and analytical implications of contemporary insurgency and counterinsurgency, with in-depth knowledge of rebel politics, governance and outcomes.

Syllabus

The nature of insurgency and counterinsurgency; theoretical analysis and doctrinal evolution; rebel governance, internal insurgent politics, meanings of victory, group and individual motivations, paradigmatic case studies.
